Old Lutheran Cemetery

We took a road trip down to Salisbury, N.C. today to visit with Sonny and Janie Allen of the Old Lutheran Cemetery to discuss some stone repair.

A very beautiful and well kept cemetery (thanks to the employees of the City of Salisbury Cemetery division). It was started in 1768 and the last burial was in 1941. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and contains approximately 300 recorded graves.

I would guess that with the large open spaces, there are a lot more graves that haven't been recorded.
Some probing and exploration should uncover some stones and bases that have fallen and became covered in that 173 years.

One stone in particular caught my eye while we were walking the cemetery.

It read:
FOOT OF JAMES A. REID
SEVERED BY A FREIGHT TRAIN ON
NOV. 25, 1893

It seems that James foot was buried in this cemetery and when he died, his body was buried in another.

AMAZING!!!

It looks like we are on track to repair approximately 25 stones in this cemetery.

I do want to thank Sonny and Janie for giving Stone Setters the opportunity to come and visit.

We were welcomed with open arms and like many North Carolina communities, we had a great time with some fine people.
