The Old Presbyterian Graveyard

The Old Presbyterian Graveyard, located behind the Greensboro Historical Museum in downtown Greensboro, N.C., is a who's who of the founders and early leaders of Greensboro.

Started in 1832 by the First Presbyterian Church, it is the resting place of approximately 323 citizens, approximately 25% of those children under the age of 5.

William R. Cumming, a Revolutionary War soldier is buried there. Samuel R. Smith from the War of 1812, numerous Confederate soldiers, mayors, congressman, and Governor John Motley Morehead are buried there. The short story writer O Henry's parents are also there.

When the church moved in 1929, improper maintenance and mother nature took their toll on the cemetery.

We have approximately 160 stones that are in need of repair. Seventy of those are on the ground.

Our efforts to save this cemetery will be detailed on this blog. We hope you enjoy it.
